Xiamen Bicycle Skyway

During the past decade, DISSING+WEITLING has worked on a number of projects that focused particularly on bicycle strategies, green initiatives and urban development. Bearing on the success of former projects, such as “The Bicycle Snake” in Copenhagen, DISSING+WEITLING has been much sought after internationally, today having on-going projects functioning as expert consultants on bicycle strategies all over the world.

As in most Chinese cities, Xiamen’s infrastructure is solely focused on cars and buses, which makes it very difficult and hazardous to bicycle along the city’s main arterial routes. To encourage bicycling, The City of Xiamen - located in southeastern China - has set out to develop a better bicycle environment in the central part of the city. As part of this long time bicycle strategy, together with the City we developed the idea of establishing an 8-kilometre long bicycle skyway on raised platforms running along and underneath the city’s existing overhead BRT skyway in the central part of the city. The vision for the new skyway is to inspire people to prioritize the green alternative, the bicycle, instead of the car.

The result is China’s first suspended bicycle path and the world’s longest aerial bicycle lane. The aerial cycle way is a 4.8-metre wide four-lane carriageway stretching for 7.6 kilometres. It covers the city’s five major residential and three business centers. There are 11 entries on the path, which will connect with 11 bus stations and two subway stations.
