Vorarlberg Rhein Bridge

Together with consulting engineers Leonhardt, Andrä und Partner and Schimetta Consult Civil Engineers, DISSING+WEITLING architecture won the competition to design a new bridge in the Austrian federal state of Vorarlberg over the Rhine between the cities Hard and Fussach. The team won the competition with a technologically advanced and sustainable design using an extradosed bridge with elegantly shaped steel pylons.

The new bridge will replace an existing bridge to protect against flooding and to increase mobility for bicyclists. The new 255-metre long bridge will be significantly wider than the existing one, which will create better facilities for both vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians. At the moment, the existing bridge is used by up to 4,300 bicyclists per day in high seasons.

The construction of the bridge is expected to begin in 2019 and is planned to be completed in 2022.
