Dissing+Weitling wins in Vilnius

Dissing+Weitling Architects has just won an important competition for the project design of a commercial complex in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius. The multi flexible office complex – with a floor area of 32,000 m2 – will become a landmark in the new financial quarter in Vilnius. It is the result of a long term cultivation of the Baltic market by the Danish design office.

Sustainable identity
With its central location in the new financial quarter close to the old town centre, the new office complex will play a significant role in the identity of this part of the city. The client therefore wanted a building that would set the modern standard for commercial builds in the area.

Dissing+Weitling’s project design is based on a concept that uses logical, sustainable solutions as an integral part of the building’s visible architecture. One example is the exterior sun screening – a system of external shutters which tilt, fold and move horizontally. The combination of glass facade and super flexible shutters ensures optimum exploitation of daylight – making the building extremely energy efficient. And the colourful shutters – with their changing positions over the day – are an important aspect of the building’s identity.

Long term strategy
The Baltic countries have been one of the key areas for Dissing+Weitling’s efforts in 2008, and the project is a visible result of the design office’s targeted activity.

“It is an interesting area to work in. We have registered a great interest in cultural and professional development, and feel we have the potential to contribute to the development of commercial builds with a focus on the layout of flexible and dynamic working conditions,” says Stig Mikkelsen, Dissing+Weitling partner responsible for the design office’s projects in the Baltics.
