Constantine Bridge

Dissing+Weitling was announced winner of the international competition for a new bridge in Constantine, Algeria together with Brazilian giant firm Andrade-Gutierrez.
The concrete cable-stayed bridge will become a pivotal structure within the historical and hilly context of the city of Constantine.

Designing in a historical environment
The bridge is designed with Constantine’s pride in bridge construction in mind: it will be a beautiful monument from a distance, as well as a fine structure to walk over and drive across. The 130 m high pylons will be a reference point for people in the area, and the bridge will be visually exciting, day and night. The winding roads leading to the bridge reveal spectacular views from several points along the way. The bridge is relatively wide with 2 lanes and a sidewalk on each side. The pylons are centrally located, separating the carriageways to either side.
The architects from Dissing+Weitling’s project team have liaised closely during the entire process with their international partners: COWI (Denmark), Zagope (Portugal) and Andrade-Gutierrez (Brazil).

The new bridge crosses the ravine above the river Rhummel to connect two important areas of the city, the ONU area and the Mansourah plateau. The bridge is an integral part of a series of infrastructure works intending to resolve the serious congestion problems plaguing Constantine. The project represents both an important cornerstone in the collaboration agreement signed between Algeria and Brazil, and a significant step towards increased collaboration between the Danish and Brazilian firms.
