Rheingoldhalle Mainz

Rheingoldhalle Mainz

The expansion of Rheingoldhalle Congress Centrum in Mainz provides a link between the existing congress centre and Mainz Town Hall. The new facility’s many functions, including a major conference space with room for 1,350 participants, reinforces the status of the old cultural city of Mainz as one of Germany’s most attractive congress cities.

DISSING+WEITLING architecture was awarded the first prize in an invited competition for the project in 2003. This commission afforded the firm with a unique opportunity to revisit and develop the elevated urban plateau around the Mainz Town Hall itself, which was designed by DISSING+WEITLING architecture  and Arne Jacobsen.

The expansion, which is aprroximately 9,500 square metres in area, encompasses a new conference hall, a new entrance vestibule, a new lobby, and a restaurant.  The desire for flexibility has been key in conceiving the new Rheingoldhalle, which can be clearly seen in the ability to divide the 1,080 square metres conference hall into four sections of 270 square metres.  This affords the event manager with the possibility to adapt the spaces to specific functions and seating arrangements within a short period of time.
