Izmir Bay Link

The Izmir Bay Link is part of the project of upgrading the infrastructure in and around the Izmir Bay. It will create a more direct connection between the North and the South part of the bay and decrease the traffic through Izmir’s downtown.

The artificial island is located in the transition between the bridge and the tunnel and becomes a part of the new Izmir Bay Link. Its location is given by the straight alignment coming from the North and the limitation of the Navigation channel.

The length of the Island is fixed by the location of the Light Rail on the bridge and the position of the Light Rail inside the tunnel tubes. Since the location of the Light Rail is not aligned between the bridge and the tunnel, the Light Rail has to cross below the road on the Island creating a 300 metre long extension of the Island. DISSING+WEITLING’s proposal tries to limit and optimize the length of the Island with other measures, whereas the width of the Island is not as significant, due to hydraulics.

We based the design of the Island on the criteria of function, identity and nature. The client selected our proposal for a Half Moon shaped structure that is hollow and can be used for numerous purposes. The “Moon” can be used for ventilation towers and everything from restaurants to museums or recreational areas.
