Goethe University transformation

The building complex was designed by the Berlin architect Hans Poelzig. The building was inaugurated in 1930 and served as administration building for I.G. Farben until the end of World War II. From 1945 until 1955 the building was the headquarters for the US army. After the fall of the Wall in 1989 the building was surrendered to the German State. An analysis of the future use of the premises was made and the conclusion was that the best use for these architecturally valuable and classified buildings would be to convert them for the arts under the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University.

During the planning phase two essential conditions had to be considered: the conversion should in all respects satisfy the new functions and the original architectural qualities should be preserved and emphasized. Fortunately no significant changes were made during the fifty years the Americans inhabited the building and already in the seventies the building was classified. The overall architectural objective was to integrate the building into the historical context in a natural way, so that the change from new to old was fluid and not always readable.

The lighting design has a prominent position in this connection. Hans Poelzig had designed individual lighting for each part of the building complex and in the recent refurbishment the lighting contributes substantially to the creation of the character of the rooms. Most of the fittings are new developments of the original fittings and are designed by DISSING+WEITLING architecture.

 

Goethe Universität ombygning

Bygningskomplekset, Poelzig Ensemble, blev tegnet af arkitekten Hans Poelzig fra Berlin. Den blev taget i brug i 1930 og tjente indtil slutningen af Anden Verdenskrig som kontorhus for I.G. Farben. Fra 1945 til 1955 rummede bygningerne hovedkvarter for den amerikanske hær. Efter Murens fald i 1989 blev bygningen overdraget til den tyske stat, og der blev foretaget analyser af mulighederne for den fremtidige brug. Konklusionen blev, at den bedste anvendelse for de arkitektonisk værdifulde og fredede bygninger ville være at indrette dem til “bogvidenskaberne” under Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universität.

I planlægningsfasen skulle der tages hensyn til to væsentlige forhold: Nyindretningen skulle på alle områder tilpasses de nye funktioner, og de oprindelige arkitektoniske kvaliteter skulle bevares og styrkes. Heldigvis var der ikke foretaget nævneværdige bygningsmæssige indgreb i de 50 år amerikanerne brugte bygningen, og den blev allerede fredet i 1970’erne. Den overordnede, arkitektoniske målsætning bestod i, at ombygningen skulle integreres i den historiske sammenhæng på en naturlig måde, så overgangen mellem nyt og gammelt blev flydende og ikke altid aflæselig.

Belysningsprojektet indtog en fremhævet position i den forbindelse. Hans Poelzig tegnede i sin tid individuel belysning for hver enkel afdeling i bygningskomplekset, og ved nyindretningen bidrog belysningen væsentlig til dannelsen af rummenes karakter. De fleste af belysningsarmaturerne i det renoverede bygningsanlæg er nyudviklinger af de oprindelige armaturer og er designet af DISSING+WEITLING architecture.
