Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway

Spanning eight kilometers, the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) will connect Cordova to Cebu City, the second largest city in the Philippines. Serving as an alternate route to and from the Mactan Cebu International Airport, the CCLEX is envisioned to boost development in the region. And with its monumental scale, the bridge is certain to become a local focal point.

A landmark for the Cebu Province

The 8-km link is designed by an international team lead by local engineers DCCD Engineering Corporation and COWI in collaboration with DISSING+WEITLING, responsible for engineering and technical advice on behalf of the owner, the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation.

The link’s 400m cable-stayed main span is supported by two single pylons, rising to a height of 145 meters. The pylons feature design references to Magellan’s Cross, which has been an important symbol for the area ever since Ferdinand Magellan planted a cross in Cebu in 1521 and baptised the first Christian Filipinos into the Catholic faith.

Besides the main span bridge with a 60m navigation clearance, which allows for shipping traffic, the project includes viaduct approach bridges and a causeway as well as toll road facilities on an artificial island, which has design references to the eight-rayed sun of the Philippine national flag.

One of the largest infrastructure projects in the Philippines

The expressway link is currently one of the largest infrastructure projects in the Philippines. Expected to serve at least 40,000 vehicles daily, CCLEX will provide a much-needed additional route from Cebu City to the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, the second busiest airport in the Philippines.

Envisioned to bolster trade activities, create more job opportunities and help reduce economic losses due to traffic congestion, the new link is expected to enhance economic growth and productivity in the local Visayas region.

Cebu is one of the most developed provinces in the Philippines, with Cebu City as the main center of commerce, trade, education and industry in the Visayas. In the last decade it has transformed into a global hub for shipping, furniture-making, tourism, business processing services, and heavy industry.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2017 with expected completion in 2022.
